Summer 2022

Death Matters and the Abolition Arts is a place for commercial ephemera of late stage capitalism until we all get turned to dust.

flipboard collages

Starting in 2022. I started to notice something strange on Flipboard.

"algorithmic artefacts"

Flipboard’s algorithm displays content on your screen by more than your interests. Patterns, colours, shapes, facial expressions, identical content with fire, and repetition of pattern between “articles.”

The algorithm produces visual links or connections between images, rendering news stories to become a collage telling a different story.

A consequence may be that there becomes a homogenization of information. meaning the collective importance of certain information is missing.

next are some examples of simply connecting two images together that appeared side by side in the feed.

Ready-made collages in the form of a news algorithm showing articles which feature photos beside each other, produce accidental juxtapositions that result in new, poignant, contemporary meanings.

Artists recontextualize their cultural experience into new forms and realities. Even though the artistic methods may be similar, the meaning and context are relevant to the times in which they exist.

Ernst described the mechanism of collage in a more general way as “the coupling of two realities, irreconcilable in appearance, upon a plane that apparently does not suit them.” [1] What arises from that coupling is something previously unknown, a new reality.

“He took an ordinary article of life, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared under the new title and point of view - created a new thought for that object.”

This I wanted to try a different style to create a stark image.
